1897 - Significant dream (oedipal, but interpreted by Freud by means of the same theory of trauma), in May. Discovers Oedipus' complex .

1898 -Concludes The Interpretation of Dreams (except Chapter 7).

1899 - Publishes Screen Memories. The Interpretation of Dreams is published on November 4^th, subjected to publishing in 1900. The book goes unnoticed.

1900 - October 14th: Starts the analysis of an 18-year-old girl, Dora.

1901 - Publishes On Dreams, a summary of The Interpretation of Dreams. Writes Dream and Hysteria , accounting the analysis of Dora, a work published in 1905 under a different title.. Publication of Psychopathology of Every Day Life.

1902 - March 5^th: Emperor Franz-Joseph signs Freud's appointment as profesor extraordinarius. Freud stops writing to Fliess. 1903 - The first disciples (Federn, Stekel, etc.)

1904 - Starts correspondence with Bleuler.

1905 - Publishes Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality , Jokes and their Relation to the Unconscious and Fragment of an Analysis of a Case of Hysteria (Dora).

1925 - An Autobiographical Study. Negation . Abraham's death (December).

1926 - Inhibition, Symptoms and Anxiety.

1927 - Publication of the volume The Future of an Illusion.

1929 - Arnold Zweig publishes an essay under the title Freud und der Mensch, praising Sigmund Freud as a savior from religious and pathological terror. Freud publishes Civilization and its Discontents.

1930 - Awarded the Goethe Prize. (Anna replaces him in Frankfort where reads his thanking discourse). September: Freud's mother dies. Collaboration with Bullitt to write Thomas Woodrow Wilson , to be published in 1967.

1932 - Sandor Ferenczi turns down his appointment as President of the International Psychoanalytical Association as result of conflicts of ideas with Freud on certain aspects of psychoanalysis. New introductory Lectures on Psychoanalysis.

1933 - Sigmund Freud has a letter exchange with Albert Einstein on the topic Why the War? May: The Nazi put Freud's work on fire in Berlin.

1935 - Sigmund Freud is assigned Honorary member of the Royal British Medical Society.

1936 - Thomas Mann makes a lecture on Freud and the Future in Konzerthaus, in Vienna.

1937 - Analysis Terminable and Interminable.

1938 - March 13^th: Austria's annexation (Anschluss). Freud's house and the headquarters of the Vienna Association of Psychoanalysis are searched. Anna Freud is arrested and interrogated by the Gestapo. Roosevelt and Mussolini intervene in Freud's favor. In June, Freud and his family emigrate to Great Britain. He continues to treat his patients.

1939 - September 23^rd, Freud's death. Moses and Monotheism is published.

1940 - An Outline of Psychoanalysis. Splitting of the Ego in the Process of Defence.

1951 - The death of Martha Freud.

1886 - At Vienna, has a hostile reception on his lecture on hysteria as well as his report on what he had seen in Charcot.. Starts private practice

Marries Martha Bernays , also of jewish descent, in September. Publishes the translation of Charcot's book Lectures on Disorders of the Nervous System.

1887 - Without giving up electrotherapy, starts using hypnosis. Mathilda's birth (October). Meets Wilhelm Fliess in November. This moment is the start of a great friendship and a mail exchange of utmost importance for the birth of psychoanalysis. December: his first letter to Fliess.

1888 - Publishes the translation of Bernheim's book On Suggestion and its Therapeutical Uses. In May, he first applies a method inspired by Breuer (on Frau Emmy von N.).

1889 - The birth of Jean-Martin, baptized in Charcot's honor (December).

1891 - Publishes a paper on aphasia, criticizing the theory of localization. The birth of Olivier (Oliver, in Cromwell's memory).

1892 - Article on hypnotic therapy. Collaboration with Breuer. A patient of his (Elisabeth von R.) suggests the method of free associations. Publishes the translation of the second Bernheim volume. The birth of Ernst, christened in Brucke's honor.

1893 -. An article on hysteria paralyses (in French, Revue de neurologie). Formulation of the traumatizing seduction theory (to be abandoned in 4 years). Birth of Sophy.

1895 - Publishes Obsession and Phobias. Together with Joseph Breuer publishes Studies on Hysteria in May. The work maintains the sexual etiology of neurosis. The birth of Anna (December).

1896 - Raises a scandal in his audience with a lecture on the sexual etiology of Hysteria. Freud for the first time uses the term "psychoanalysis". The death of Jacob Freud (October).

The Life And Times Of Sigmund Freud

Childhood, School Years

1856 - 6 May: Sigmund freud was born Sigismund Freud in Freiberg(nowadays Pribor). He changed his name to Sigmund at 22. His Jewish name was Schlomo. in Moravia (the Czech Republic).

1859 - The economic crisis ruins his father’s business. The family settles in Vienna, in Leopoldstadt, the Jewish neighborhood

1870 – He is greatly influenced by the complete works of Ludwig Borne .

1873 - He receives a summa cum laudae award on graduation from secondary school. He is very fluent in German and in addition is able to read in several languages. Under his colleague's Heinrich Braun influence, he plans to study law. However he decides on medicine after having attended a lecture on Goethe's essay On Nature and starts his studies at Vienna University.

1876 - His first personal research in Trieste, on sexual glands of anguilas and joins Brucke's laboratory.

1877 - Publishes the result of his anatomical research on the central nervous system of a specific larva.

1878 – He continues his research in Brucke's laboratory, which brings him to a step's distance from the discovery of the neuron (called as such by Waldeyer in 1891). He befriend Breur, who is his senior by 14 years, who provides him moral and material support.

1879 - Attends Meynert's courses in psychiatry. His sole interest is the neurological aspect of issues under debate.

1880 - A year of military service. Breuer provides treatment to Bertha Pappenheim (Anna O.). Freud translates 4 essays by Stuart Mills. He is not willing to dedicate himself to medical practice but rather to research or teaching. .

1881 - A delayed award of a doctor's degree in medicine.

1882 - Given the material difficulties he is undergoing, Freud cannot dedicate himself to a career in research. He meets Martha Bernays (of family of Jewish intellectuals) and intends to get married with her. In November, Breuer talks to him about the Anna O. case, which had been interrupted in June.

1883 - Joins Meynert's service in the Psychiatric Hospital.

1884 - Discovers the analgesic properties of cocaine. Carl Koller is the one publishing a successful study in that respect. Freud himself uses cocaine as a tonic but prescribes it to his friend Fleischl who was morphine addicted, thereby aggravating his situation [learn more…]. He is criticized in medical circles.. He at the same time devised a method for coloring neurologic preparations (for the microscope) and publishes an article in that respect as well as a monograph on coke.

1885-. He is appointed Privatdozent, then is awarded a grant for a study tour and chooses to go to Paris, to visit Charcot at the Salpetriere Hospital. He is able to observe the manifestations of hysteria and the effects of hypnosis and suggestion here. Charcot leaves him with special impression. Freud volunteers to translate his lectures.

ROAD RAGE DISORDER:The latest addition to the list of disorders in psychiatry is Road Rage Disorder, sometimes called Intermittent Explosive Disorder(IED). Big Pharma and its disease-pushing sidekick, psychiatry, is now inventing new diseases hoping that impressionable consumers can be hoodwinked.Though i am a psychiatrist i do think that these people may actually be having other personality problems which make them prone to going into fits of rage when on the road.

Did you know that being female might help combat psychosis. For example, more women with schizophrenia marry than men with schizophrenia do, hence having a partner might help them cope with serious mental illness. Women with schizophrenia are less likely to abuse substances than are men with schizophrenia, and lack of substance abuse,this leads to better recovery. Female hormones may also boost women's ability to cope with illness. Psychopathology has been shown to improve when estrogen levels rise, and vice versa. In fact, it may be considered that estrogen serves as a "natural" antipsychotic by inhibiting postsynaptic dopamine transmission.

A recent study has studied personality traits known to contribute to health, life satisfaction, and positive interpersonal relationships, namely confident optimism, insight into others and warm feelings toward others, productive activity, and skill at relating to others.
Stressful life events in the previous two years, such as death of a loved one, parental divorce, serious illness, or a romance rejection were evaluated.the evaluators assessed them for four negative outcomes: interpersonal difficulties, educational or occupational problems, psychiatric disorders or suicide attempts, and violent or criminal behaviors.they later tried to connect possessing the 4 positive traits to susceptibility of negative outcomes and found a statistically significant dose-response relationship between the number of positive personality traits and a decreasing likelihood of each of the four negative mental health outcomes in early adulthood.
Moreover, those who experienced numerous stressful events as adolescents and who had fewer of the traits were found to be at elevated risk of deleterious mental outcomes as young adults. Thissuggests that howm traits safeguard adult mental health.

Resilence

Resilience. Call it what you will - the ability to weather stresses large and small, to bounce back from trauma and get on with life, to learn from negative experiences and translate them into positive ones, to muster the strength and confidence to change directions when a chosen path becomes blocked or nonproductive.
Or you can sum it up as actualization of A.A.'s serenity prayer: "Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference."
Being resilient does not mean a life without risks or adverse conditions but rather learning how to deal effectively with the inevitable stresses of life.
Herein lies an important concept: learning. To be sure, some of what makes up resilience is inborn.
But resilience can also be learned. Experts like Dr. Brooks and Dr. Goldstein, psychologists and authors whose newest book, "The Power of Resilience" (Contemporary Books), provides lessons in "achieving balance, confidence and personal strength."

This is for all you students especially of psych, i would love to share a few basic insights with you, when you go to diagnosing mental illnesses beware.Always think how it would feel to be in that person's shoes. Lots of guys do believe that schizophrenics live in a parallel world of their own,but is that really true.how much does their parallel world cause problems to persons living in this world is too hard to imagine.I would caution u against diagnosing them just on the basis of first rank symptoms.There's a lot of deterioration in their entire functioning that also goes hand in hand.So always look out for that.And never be in a hurry to diagnose.Remembere one diagnosis leaves the person fighting for his rights, unable to validate a marriage or his basic rights. So think b4 giving the illness a name. Thats why shrinks have to keep their heart in the right place.

I'm a student of psychiatry, I have earned my degree from a reputed college in India and now i practice here. I find it a marvelling science in that every human interaction has something for the student to study. especially when there are movies that is the best treat for upcoming students to learn the intricacies of the human mind. its also a good excuse to go to the theatres.My all time faves are City of Angels, Casablanca, Legends of the fall.
